While there are hundreds of PEOs across the United States, very few PEOs can operate on a national level. Most PEOs operate on a local or regional level. While a PEO may be headquartered in one state, they may be operating in many surrounding states. StaffMarket works with PEOs providing coverage and services through the USA and our database tracks the states covered by our member PEOs.
Each Professional Employer Organization has limitations on the states for which they can except clients. Currently 23 states have some sort of licensing requirements for a PEO.
Because each PEO also is responsible for payroll, calculating state and local taxes for each area of the USA can be a challenge. Not all PEOs can calculate and remit taxes for all areas of the USA.
Each PEO offering coverage under a master Workers Compensation policy must have an insurance policy in place that is recognized by the individual state department of insurance for each state in which they have clients. For example a PEO operating in Florida must provide Workers Compensation coverage through a policy written by an insurance carrier that is authorized by the Florida Department of Insurance.
This is the biggest issue that affects which PEO is a fit for a particular client. Each PEO has access to either a master policy or an individually underwritten policy that affects the PEOs ability to accept the client or not. High risk accounts (like roofing and steel erection) have become increasingly difficult for PEO to accept as the overall market for workers compensation insurance has tightened. Many PEOs have moved to a lower risk target client in order to lessen their exposure to workers compensation claims and losses. StaffMarket tracks the excluded business types for each of our member PEOs allowing us to target the exact PEO that is a fit for every account.
Each PEO may have different health insurance plans for clients based on the location. Some PEOs have plans available in one state and not in others or have only certain plans that are available in all states. Access to health insurance plans is typically very dependent on location and the health networks local availability. In addition each PEO may have client participation requirements that vary by plan type and location. StaffMarket tracks plans and requirements on our member PEOs allowing us to target the exact PEO that are a fit for every account.
Each PEO has different minimum client sizes, usually expressed in number of client-employees. StaffMarket tracks minimum client size information on our member PEOs allowing us to target the exact PEO that is a good fit for every account.
